Ina Garten Foolproof (p. 142)
Vegetable oil - 1⁄2 cup
Yellow onion - 1
Garlic - 3 cloves
Tomato paste - 10 oz
Cider vinegar - 1 cup
Honey - 1 cup
Worcestershire sauce - 1⁄2 cup
Dijon mustard - 1 cup
Soy sauce - 1⁄2 cup
Hoisin sauce - 1 cup
Chili powder - 2 tbl
Ground cumin - 1 tbl
Red pepper flakes - 1 1⁄2 tsp
Yellow onion - chop
Garlic - mince
Heat the oil in a large saucepan over low heat, add the onions, and cook for 10 to 15 minutes, until the onions are translucent but not browned. Add the garlic and cook for 1 more minute. Add the tomato paste, vinegar, honey, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, soy sauce, hoisin sauce, chili powder, cumin, and red pepper flakes.
Bring to a boil, then lower the heat and simmer uncovered for 30 minutes. Use the sauce immediately or pour into a container and refrigerate.
